Education pathways in Austria
In Austria you usually need the Matura (school-leaving exam), for example at an AHS (academic secondary school). After that there are journalism degrees at an FH (university of applied sciences) or degrees such as journalism and communication studies at a university. Practical experience with a school newspaper, radio or internships is almost always important. In Germany the equivalent is the Gymnasiale Oberstufe (Abitur) and a degree at a Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften or a university, in Switzerland the Gymnasium (Maturität) and a degree at a Fachhochschule or a university or ETH.
- AHS-Oberstufe (Gymnasium)
- General education with Matura as the basis for university. 4 years
- Fachhochschule (FH)
- Practice-oriented degree, often with an internship. 3-year bachelor
- Universität
- Academic degree: bachelor, master or diploma. 3 to 6 years
