Architecture

Architects design buildings and spaces where people like to live and work. Creativity meets structural engineering, regulations and budgets.

Typical tasks

  • discussing with clients what is needed
  • sketching designs and planning them on the computer
  • building models or creating 3D views
  • coordinating plans with structural engineers, building services and authorities
  • supervising construction on site

Where people work

Architects work in architecture firms, for property developers, in urban planning departments of cities and regions, or self-employed with their own office.

A good fit if

  • you are creative and like designing
  • buildings and cities fascinate you
  • you are not put off by maths and physics
  • you work carefully and have patience for long projects

Education pathways in Austria

In Austria you can start through an HTL (higher technical college) specialising in building construction, or study architecture at a university after the Matura (school-leaving exam). If you later want to sign plans on your own responsibility as an architect, you need several years of practice and a separate exam after your degree. In Germany the equivalent is the Fachoberschule Technik and a university degree, in Switzerland the Berufsmaturität Technik and a degree at a university or ETH.

HTL (Höhere Technische Lehranstalt)
Matura and technical vocational training in one. 5 years
Universität
Academic degree: bachelor, master or diploma. 3 to 6 years

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to be good at drawing?

Freehand drawing helps with design. Today, however, planning is mostly done on the computer, and you learn that in your training.

What can I do with an HTL qualification?

With an HTL in building technology you can work as a building technician in planning offices or go on to study.

Is architecture just art?

No. Besides design, it is about technology, costs, laws and good cooperation with many people involved.
