Construction engineering

Construction technicians plan and manage building sites, calculate costs and keep an eye on schedules. They are the link between the plan and the finished building.

Typical tasks

  • drawing and calculating construction plans
  • estimating costs and comparing quotes
  • coordinating work on the building site
  • checking quality and safety on site
  • talking with clients, authorities and companies

Where people work

Construction technicians work for building companies, planning and engineering offices, municipalities and regional governments or property developers, partly in the office and partly on site.

A good fit if

  • you are interested in building and technology
  • you are good at organising
  • you calculate and plan carefully
  • you like switching between office and building site

Education pathways in Austria

In Austria an HTL (higher technical college) for building technology is a typical path; it ends with the Matura (school-leaving exam). After that you can study civil engineering at an FH (university of applied sciences). In Germany the equivalent is the Fachoberschule Technik and a Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften, in Switzerland the Berufsmaturität Technik and a Fachhochschule.

HTL (Höhere Technische Lehranstalt)
Matura and technical vocational training in one. 5 years
Fachhochschule (FH)
Practice-oriented degree, often with an internship. 3-year bachelor

Frequently asked questions

Am I more in the office or on site?

It depends on the job. In site management you are outdoors a lot, in planning you work more on the computer.

Is there also a path through an apprenticeship?

Yes, for example through an apprenticeship as a construction technical assistant or in a building trade, followed by further training.

What is a Baumeister?

A Baumeister (master builder) is allowed to plan and construct buildings. This requires practical experience and a separate exam.
