Electronics technician
Electronics technicians install, test and repair electrical systems, from the socket in a flat to the control system in a factory. They work with plans, measuring devices and their own hands, and make sure electricity flows safely.
Typical tasks
- laying and connecting cables, switches, sockets and distribution boards in buildings
- reading circuit diagrams and building systems from them
- finding faults with measuring devices and checking systems for safety
- setting up controls for lighting, heating, machines or solar panels
- explaining to customers how a system works
Where people work
Electronics technicians work for electrical contractors, on building sites, in industrial companies and for energy suppliers. Many spend the day at customers' premises, others work in a workshop or production hall.
A good fit if
- you like understanding how technology works
- maths and physics come easily to you, or make sense to you with practical examples
- you work carefully, because with electricity every detail counts
- you like working with your hands and seeing what you have achieved
Education pathways in Austria
In Austria the most common path is a Lehre (apprenticeship) in electrical engineering: you learn in a company and also attend a vocational school. If you want to combine the Matura (school-leaving exam) with technology, you can choose an HTL (higher technical college) specialising in electrical engineering or electronics. In Germany the equivalent is the Duale Ausbildung or the Fachoberschule Technik, in Switzerland the Berufslehre (EFZ) or the Berufsmaturität Technik.
- Lehre
- Training in a company and at vocational school. With 'Lehre mit Matura' it can also lead to university entrance. 2 to 4 years
- HTL (Höhere Technische Lehranstalt)
- Matura and technical vocational training in one. 5 years

Frequently asked questions
How long does the apprenticeship take?
Usually three and a half to four years, depending on the specialisation. The exact length depends on the module you choose.
Do I need the Matura?
No. Finishing compulsory school is enough for the apprenticeship. You can add the Matura later through the Lehre mit Matura programme or the Berufsreifeprüfung (vocational school-leaving exam).
Is the job dangerous?
Electricity is dangerous if you are careless. That is why your training teaches you exactly how to work safely, and safety rules are a fixed part of everyday work.
