Robotics and AI

In robotics and artificial intelligence, people create machines and programs that see, learn and help. Maths, programming and engineering come together here.

Typical tasks

  • planning and programming robots and their movements
  • processing data from sensors such as cameras
  • training and testing learning programs with data
  • building and improving prototypes
  • documenting results and discussing them in the team

Where people work

Robotics and AI specialists work in industry, technology companies, medical technology, agricultural technology, research institutions and universities.

A good fit if

  • technology and future topics excite you
  • you enjoy maths and computer science
  • you like trying out ideas
  • you learn new things quickly

Education pathways in Austria

In Austria an HTL (higher technical college) specialising in mechatronics, electronics or IT is a good way into this field. After that you deepen your knowledge with a university degree, for example in robotics, computer science, electrical engineering or artificial intelligence. In Germany the equivalent is the Fachoberschule Technik and a university degree, in Switzerland the Berufsmaturität Technik and a degree at a university or ETH.

HTL (Höhere Technische Lehranstalt)
Matura and technical vocational training in one. 5 years
Universität
Academic degree: bachelor, master or diploma. 3 to 6 years

Frequently asked questions

Can I start while I am still at school?

Yes. Robotics courses, school competitions and kits are a good start.

Do I need a degree?

For development and research, usually yes. With an HTL qualification there are entry jobs in maintaining and programming robots.

Will robots replace people?

They take over some tasks. At the same time people are needed to develop them, look after them and use them responsibly.
