Data scientist
Data scientists look for patterns in large amounts of data and use them to answer questions, for example about traffic, health or the climate. Maths, statistics and programming are their tools.
Typical tasks
- collecting and cleaning data and checking it for errors
- finding connections with statistical methods
- writing programs that analyse data or make predictions
- presenting results clearly in charts and reports
- discussing with experts which questions the data should answer
Where people work
Data scientists work in companies in every sector, in research institutions, at insurers and banks, in healthcare and in public administration.
A good fit if
- you enjoy numbers and maths
- you are curious and like getting to the bottom of questions
- you work carefully and check results critically
- you are interested in programming
Education pathways in Austria
In Austria the usual path is the Matura (school-leaving exam), for example at an AHS (academic secondary school), followed by a university degree, for example in statistics, mathematics, computer science or data science. In Germany the equivalent is the Gymnasiale Oberstufe (Abitur) and a university degree, in Switzerland the Gymnasium (Maturität) and a degree at a university or ETH.
- AHS-Oberstufe (Gymnasium)
- General education with Matura as the basis for university. 4 years
- Universität
- Academic degree: bachelor, master or diploma. 3 to 6 years

Frequently asked questions
How is it different from statistics?
Data science uses statistics but combines it closely with programming and large amounts of data.
Is it possible without a degree?
A degree is the usual path here. With an HTL qualification in IT you can start in related roles and train further.
Which school subjects matter?
Above all maths, computer science and English.
